South Walton County, Florida
Each year Sandcastle Designs collaborates with Curacao, Inc. to plan and furnish a “Dream Home”. This year’s “Dream Cottage” is located in Watercolor, the sensational new township in South Walton County set amidst the natural splendor of Western lake and the Gulf of Mexico.
Crimson Park is the focal point of the neighborhood. Its tightly manicured lawn sharply contrasts the surrounding indigenous sea oats, dwarf live oaks, and slash pines. Roses, ferns, palmettos, and moss provide additional color and interest to the sandy, scrub-dune landscape. A short wall provides seating and surrounds the lawn in front of the homes. All of this combines to create a dramatic setting for our “Dream Cottage”.
The exterior of the cottage features board-and-batten siding, tin roofing, and pleasing window silhouettes framed with shutters and architectural pediments. The brick foundation is enhanced with trelliswork. The home’s builder, Onno Horn of Curacao, Inc., commented, “I wanted the color palette to reflect the rose garden theme of the neighborhood.” The exterior imitates the warmth of pink rose petals that combines with a rich forest-green and accents of crème.
An intimate covered porch and a series of tall wood and glass French doors welcome guests. Philippine mahogany floors provide a warm foundation for the main floor and the upstairs private master retreat. Spacious floor to ceiling heights in the living room enhance the mahogany plank-and-beam exposed rafter system and a double balcony overlook from above. A fireplace provides an architectural focal point in the living area.
The living area opens to a professionally equipped kitchen that features a Viking range and hood and a Sub Zero refrigerator. The unique kitchen counters are sanded and sealed concrete, and a crescent bar surface separates the two spaces. Hand-rubbed custom cabinets provide an Old World craftsman appearance. The cabinets extend from the kitchen and dining area to an office workspace and a laundry room. Other notable features include custom wrought iron guard railing and mosaic tile applications in the two full bathrooms. The home also has state of the art sound and alarm systems.
Sandcastle designers planned and designed the cottage’s interior. The team first defined a profile of the home’s future owners then anticipated the functions of each room. “We wanted the home to have a sense of 1920’s nostalgia, and it needed to be comfortable and fun,” Kimberly Lyon related.
The next phase of the project involved selecting the colors and patterns for each of the rooms. The designers wanted to expand Mr. Horn’s vision of the rose garden theme and they also wanted to add spice with warm and cool Caribbean patterns.
The living room furnishings include a “shelter” slip covered sofa and chair in a duck cloth material. The sand colored sofa has toss pillows in a paprika floral pattern and pillows of crimson and green stripes to repeat the chair fabric. These pieces were positioned intimately around the fireplace. The designers chose a woven rattan accent chair with a Ming-branch pattern flanked by a Mission inspired mahogany and black accent table. A black leather ottoman and a natural sisal black border rug add visual weight to the room. An entertainment cabinet in scrubbed white will house the room’s television and a receiver for the surround-sound system. A wicker buffet stationed behind the sofa welcomes visitors and holds lighting and accent pieces.
In the dining area a window seat upholstered in a Robert Allen toile is backed with assorted Palm print pillows. Other pillows contrast smooth and rough textures, shiny and dull surfaces. The simple fabric window shades have a vine pattern on the folds and allow an uninhibited view of Crimson Park. Fabric shades were utilized throughout the home.
The upstairs master retreat includes a sitting area niche at the top of the staircase. The bedroom focal point is Lane’s China Passages king bed from the Williamsburg collection, and the fabrics and rose wall color create a warm but soothing mood. “My fun choice was a bombe Bee Chest complete with honeycomb finish, bee motif hardware, and hand painted decoration,” Kimberly adds. “We selected a “worker bee” motif fabric for bed pillows to repeat this theme.” The master bedroom also includes a “must see” secret passageway and hidden bonus room, a sleep area for children.
The art and accents in the cabin echo the rose garden theme and reflect the mood of a nostalgic lake cabin.
